Cooling that stays quiet and stays cheap to run

Small Grove services, repairs and deep-cleans domestic air conditioning. Every job starts with a measured diagnosis and a written quote, so nothing is fitted or replaced before you have agreed to it.

Units we handle
Wall splits, multi-splits, ceiling cassettes and small ducted systems.
Appointments
Morning or afternoon windows, with a message before the engineer sets off.
Quoting
Findings, parts and labour written down first. No work begins without approval.
Symptom guide

What the unit is telling you

Most call-outs fall into a handful of patterns. Read the row that matches before you book — it usually tells you whether this is a clean, a part, or a survey.

01

Blows air, never gets cold

Usually means

Low refrigerant pressure from a slow leak, or a condenser fan that is turning too slowly to shed heat.

What we do

Pressure test and leak trace before any top-up. A system that has emptied once will empty again if the leak is left.

02

Musty smell on start-up

Usually means

Biofilm on the indoor coil and blower wheel, held damp by a drain tray that is not clearing properly.

What we do

Full deep clean of coil, wheel and tray, then a flush and fall check on the condensate line.

03

Water marking the wall below

Usually means

Blocked or back-falling condensate drain, or an iced coil melting faster than the tray can drain.

What we do

Clear and test the drain run, correct the fall where we can reach it, and find out why the coil iced up.

04

Rattle or whine that is new

Usually means

Fan bearing wear, a loose blower wheel, or outdoor unit mounts that have worked themselves loose.

What we do

Isolate the noise indoors and out, re-seat or replace the failing part, and re-check vibration afterwards.

05

Bills climbing, same settings

Usually means

Loaded filters, a dirty outdoor coil, or a unit that is undersized for a room that has since been extended or glazed.

What we do

Service the airflow path first, then measure the room and tell you honestly if the sizing is the real problem.

If the unit has tripped the breaker more than once, switch it off at the isolator and book a repair call rather than a service — repeated tripping is an electrical fault, not a dirty filter.

Scopes of work

Four ways we come out

Each visit has a defined scope so you know what is covered before the engineer arrives, and what would be quoted separately.

Scope A

Annual service

The yearly maintenance visit that keeps efficiency and warranty conditions intact.

  • Filter wash or replacement, indoor and outdoor coil clean
  • Condensate tray and drain flush with a flow test
  • Refrigerant pressure and superheat readings logged
  • Electrical connections, contactor and capacitor checked
  • Temperature split measured at the grille and recorded

Not included: replacement parts, refrigerant charging, or work above safe ladder height.

Scope B

Repair call-out

For a system that has stopped, trips, leaks water or has lost its cooling.

  • Fault diagnosis with gauges, clamp meter and error-code read
  • Leak trace by pressure decay or electronic sniffer
  • Written findings with the options and their consequences
  • Common parts carried on the van where the model allows
  • Repair only proceeds once you have approved the quote

Not included: parts on back order, or rebuilds we judge uneconomic against a replacement.

Scope C

Deep clean

A strip-level clean for units that smell, or that have never been cleaned properly.

  • Indoor unit bagged and pressure washed in place
  • Blower wheel removed and cleaned, not just wiped
  • Coil treated with a non-caustic sanitising cleaner
  • Tray, drain and louvres cleared and rinsed through
  • Room protected and dried down before we leave

Not included: ductwork cleaning, or plaster and decoration repairs behind the unit.

Scope D

Install & relocation survey

A measured survey before you commit to a new unit or move an existing one.

  • Heat load estimate from room volume, glazing and orientation
  • Indoor and outdoor siting options with pipe run lengths
  • Condensate and power routing assessed honestly
  • Noise considerations for boundaries and bedrooms
  • Written specification you can compare against other quotes

Not included: structural alterations, scaffolding, or planning and freeholder consent.

On the day

How a visit runs

A standard service takes about an hour for a single wall split, a little longer for a multi-split or a deep clean.

  1. 01

    Message before we set off

You get a note at the start of your window so nobody waits in all morning.

  2. 02

    Readings before anything is opened

Running pressures, current draw and grille temperatures are taken while the system is still as you use it.

  3. 03

Work carried out on protected floors

Sheets down, unit bagged where washing is involved, and everything cleared before we pack up.

  4. 04

    Written findings, in plain terms

What was measured, what was done, and what to watch over the next season — with a quote attached only if something genuinely needs attention.

The seasonal care calendar

Half of what keeps a system healthy is owner-side and takes minutes. The rest needs gauges. Here is the honest division.

What you can do

Every month in use
Slide out the indoor filters, rinse in warm water, dry fully before refitting. This alone is the single biggest efficiency win.
Every season
Clear leaves, bags and garden growth from within half a metre of the outdoor unit so it can shed heat.
Before first hot use
Run it on cooling for fifteen minutes with a window open and listen. Odd noise or smell now is far cheaper than in August.
Over winter
Run heating or fan mode briefly each month if the unit supports it, to keep seals and bearings from drying out.

What needs an engineer

Annually
Pressure and superheat readings, electrical checks and a drain flow test — the items that keep most manufacturer warranties valid.
Every two to three years
Blower wheel and coil deep clean, depending on how dusty the room is and whether pets share it.
When performance drops
Leak trace before any refrigerant is added. Topping up a leaking system is money poured into the garden.
Before you buy
A sizing survey. An oversized unit short-cycles and dehumidifies badly; an undersized one never stops.
Bright, calm living room interior kept at an even temperature
A serviced system holds temperature with less noise and less running time
Questions

Asked on most jobs

How often do filters really need washing?
Monthly during the months you actually run the system, and it takes about five minutes. A loaded filter starves the coil of airflow, which drops the cooling output, raises the running cost and eventually ices the coil. If you have pets or the unit is in a kitchen, make it fortnightly.
Will you just top up the gas if it has lost cooling?
Not on its own. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant, so if the charge is low there is a leak. We pressure test and trace first, quote the repair, and only then recharge. Repeated top-ups without a repair are both wasteful and, for most refrigerants, not something we are prepared to do.
Why is the unit noisier than it used to be?
Most new noise is mechanical rather than serious: a fan bearing starting to dry out, a blower wheel loaded unevenly with dust, or outdoor mounts that have loosened and are now passing vibration into the wall. All three are cheap if caught early and expensive if a bearing seizes.
Can servicing actually reduce what it costs to run?
Yes, though we will not promise a figure. Clean filters, a clean outdoor coil and a correct charge let the system reach the set temperature sooner and then cycle off. A clogged, undercharged system runs for longer to achieve less, which is where the cost creeps in.
We let the flat out — can the tenant be there instead?
That is fine. We need an adult present who can give access to both the indoor unit and the outdoor unit, plus permission from you for the scope of work. Findings and any quote go to whoever is paying, and we are happy to send a copy to both parties.
Does skipping a service affect the manufacturer warranty?
Usually, yes. Most manufacturers require documented annual maintenance for warranty cover to stand, and will ask for records if a compressor fails. We leave a dated record of readings and work after every visit precisely so you have something to produce.
Do you work on units you did not install?
Almost all of our work is on systems installed by someone else. We will service any major domestic brand. The only time we step back is when a system has been installed in a way that cannot be made safe, and in that case you will get a written explanation rather than a bill.
